PROCESSING TECHNOLOGIES

Description

With the Sustainable Development Goals in mind, the CTT team of experts developed research projects focused on processes that have a low impact carbon footprint, reduce the water consumption, lower energy needs. Few projects are CTT-owned, some others are with industrial partners.

  • Photopolymerization is particularly interesting as it requires light source with low energy consumption (LED) and is easy to manipulate. The water consumption is non-significant and sample handling highly easy.

  • Supercritical CO2 dyeing and finishing is also a process to be managed by CTT in North America. With a production technology that is proven effective with polyester fibers, a lot of opportunities for other textile materials are considered for many application.

  • With the needs of new fibers with low carbon footprint, wet spinning technology is also targeted by CTT as a new way to produce fibers, particularly with bio-sourced polymers.

  • A nonwoven hybrid machine airlaid /needlepunch with its card and cross lapper is also planned to be received in 2024.

  • Additionally, to these processes, CTT is equipped with lab-scale prototyping machines, with some of them designed to process carbon fibers:
    • Yarn spinning: mini card-drawframe-ringspinning machine;
    • Loom 50 cm wide
    • Narrow fabric jacquard loom
    • Knitting fully fashion
    • Finishing line 50cm wide
    • Needle punch nonwoven machine
    • TFP / embroidery
    • Extrusion line

PERFORMANCE TESTING OF TEXTILE MATERIALS, POLYMERS & COMPOSITES

State-of-the-art lab in North America, CTT is equipped to perform testing on textile materials, solid polymers, Geosynthetics and composite materials. Our capacities cover a wide range of evaluation

Accelerated ageing: including UV exposures; temperature cycling; static loading; flexing; salt fog exposure; repeated flexing; exposure to chemicals

Chemical testing: fiber content; polymers identification; molecules/element content; spectrometric analysis (UV-VIS-Near infrared-infrared); chromatography (HPLC-MS; GC-MS; Ionic chromatography; ICP-OES); chemical permeation; oxidation induction time (OIT and HP-OIT).

Mechanical-Dynamometry: well-known for its wide range of testing capacity, CTT is equipped to perform tensile and compression tests, from 5N to 300kN, with climatic chambers (-70°C to 250°C) with contact and video extensometers. Impact tester is also available for solid polymers and plastic films.

Physical testing includes all measurements related to textile identification, knit/weave pattern, fiber and yarn dimensions, comfort evaluation including breathability and thermal insulation, fabric hand (Kawabata full testing line)

Flammability: burnt length, after flame and afterglow time, Radiant protective performance (RPP), thermal protective performance (TPP), FlashFireMan ™ - exposure to hydrocarbon flash fire as per NFPA 2112, smoke density, cone calorimeter, radiant panel index and self-extinguishment, toxic gas content.

Water behavior: water vapor permeability, waterproofness, drainage capacity and transmissivity, wicking rate and drying time.

Biodegradability and microbiological lab: biodurden evaluation of materials, bacteria resistance, anti-fungal activity, biodegradability.

Medical textiles: medical gowns, surgical drapes and gowns, medical masks, cardiovascular implants.

Custom-made testing: CTT adapts test methods, develops new concepts of measurements, participates actively to Standard committees (ASTM, CGSB, etc…)
