Patent for a mathematical model for fall prevention
Description
Afraid of falling? How can we alleviate that fear? Ideally, by eliminating falls entirely. Those were our initial research questions. We separated the mathematical process of fall prevention into the mathematical components fall recognition, timely intervention before the fall takes place, and ending the intervention. The topical paper "Algorithms for Stability of Human Motion and novel methods of the stability enhancement " by Joseph Evenden and Feo V Kusmartsev was published in April 2020. It contains mathematical descriptions for the calculation of a moving person's imminent instability. Previously collected, personalised data is used in this calculation. The pertinent value ranges have been developed by Prof Kusmartsev in his laboratory over several years.
In case of imminent danger of falling based on the continuously collected datasets, a counterforce is activated to reestablish equilibrium. This process is repeated until the danger has passed. Certain strategies employed by the client such as sidesteps/lunges or flailing of the arms are allowed, as long as they do not further destabilise the wearer. Otherwise, the counterforces around the head area or extremities are also activated.
