Multi-scale modelling and simulation of textile structures, composites and textile processes

Beschreibung

At ITM, intensive research is carried out on the modeling and simulation of structures and processes along the entire textile process chain. By means of multi-scale modeling and simulation, a profound understanding of materials and processes is achieved. Models based on the finite element method (FEM) are developed, experimentally validated and applied on the micro-, meso- and macro-scales for yarns, textile structures (e.g. woven, knitted and braided fabrics) and composites or textile-reinforced concrete. The simulation of processing procedures provides designs according to requirements for a subsequent structural investigation and further development of the textile semi-finished products.

High-performance yarns made from various material combinations – e.g. recycled carbon fibers (rCF), aramid fibers and plastic fibers – are investigated with the aid of simulation. The micro-scale models created for this purpose provide predictions of structural mechanical characteristics at different fiber volume contents and properties of the fibers.

Simulation models developed at ITM are able to predict structural properties of textile fabrics. Thus, optimal fabric and machine settings can be found for defined applications without having to produce the textile beforehand. In combination with the comprehensive machinery at the ITM labs and the textile-technological know-how, there are ideal conditions for the implementation of R&D projects with the industry from the textile sector and related branches.

In the field of plastics reinforced with high-performance fibers, FEM models are developed for the forming of the semi-finished product in the mold as well as the structural analysis on the microscale. The models are used, for example, in the areas of fiber-reinforced plastics, filter textiles, medical textiles, carbon concrete and textile membranes.

Modeling and simulation of footwear and footwear components helps to accelerate the development process in the footwear industry. Various other use cases complete the profile of ITM as a simulation service provider in the field of textile technology. We are looking forward to your project ideas and assist you with the implementation!
